Medical Science states that the highest function of the nervous system is consciousness, which Buddha describes as awareness through meditation. Whatever we do, if done with awareness of ourselves and our surroundings, enhances this consciousness.
Neurotransmitters develop awareness through the present-moment activity of 86 cranial nerves and sense organs. Buddha taught meditation (Zhan) as a method to refine this consciousness, ultimately leading to Samadhi—the state of Nibbana.
Meditation is not about action itself but the quality of awareness we bring to it. Walking, sitting, listening to lectures, birds, or even silence can be meditation if done mindfully. Simply observing our breath, body, or mind with awareness is meditation.
Buddha's core message is to avoid unconsciousness or heedlessness. When we act with awareness, everything becomes meditation.
